Hebe Hatton, millennial and Head of Interiors at Homes & Gardens, is a self-proclaimed colorphobe and trendphobe––but there is something about Gen Z decor that attracts her to both its joyful colors and contemporary patterns. She explains that, despite her minimalist style, she finds herself “ready to embrace it ever so slightly in [her] own home.”
Describing Gen Z decor is difficult, especially because the style has grown so much in the past few years. Currently, many Gen Z interior design trends include finding unique vintage pieces such as full-length mirrors or thrifted bar carts to add visual depth to a room. As a whole, Gen Z decor aims to create a space that feels full of character and light. Colorphobes, beware.
When Hatton decided to incorporate parts of the new Gen Z decor style into her current apartment, her goal was to keep her rooms feeling timeless and sophisticated. She compiled a list of ways to do exactly that:
The simplest way is to visit your local antique shop and buy a few vintage pieces that reflect your personal style. Blending decor from different eras and styles is a staple of the Gen Z style. The goal is to find a few unique focal points for the room, like ornate Parisian frames or unique mirrors.
Hatton also recommends going for a subtler take on maximalism by embracing the bold and the brave. Choose patterns that blend with your personal style. If you’re really interested in the Gen Z style, investigate pieces with checkerboard patterns. With an addition of casual retro furniture pieces, you’re on your way to creating the perfect Gen Z-inspired space that also reflects your personal taste.
